When looking for study abroad destinations in Europe, Greece is an often-overlooked host. Located on the crossroads between Europe and Asia, there are a variety of things to do while you’re spending your semester here.
If you are studying history or anthropology, there might not be a better place to visit than Greece, right in the cradle of civilization and democracy, where you can see ancient ruins next to modern architecture. Athens has all the top tourist spots like the Acropolis, Parthenon and Temple of Poseidon, but there are amazing natural and historic sites to see all around the country. Olympia is an ancient archeological site home of the Olympic Games. For natural wonders head to Meteora, where gravity-defying pillars of stone jut straight out of the ground with solemn monasteries sitting at the top.
While Paris and London are packed with international students, Greece is enough off the radar you will be able to better experience the country alongside the locals. The country is known for having friendly locals and a relaxing lifestyle. Don’t be put off by the stories of protests that have rocked the country. These demonstrations are usually pre-planned and do not last long enough to disrupt daily life, so visitors are sure to be safe and can keep their distance if they choose to do so.
Finally, after all that studying and exploring you are going to want to let your hair down and find a party. The Greek Islands have long been a popular destination for local and international travelers. Mykonos and Ios are two of the many islands that feature pristine beaches and energetic clubs. For a younger party crowd, Ios has a lot of options for nightlife, located adjacent to quiet, peaceful towns with great shops and restaurants. Mykonos is a more cosmopolitan destination regarded as a travel mecca on the Aegean Sea. This town is not quite as wild as Ios, focusing more on beach bars than clubs, but you are sure to find a spot to your liking.

This year, the Northern Lights put on quite the display across Ireland, but don’t think these lights are the only thing you can see in Ireland. In fact, many spots across the country provide some of the best opportunities to stargaze thanks to low levels of light pollution. Ireland has three International Dark Sky Parks and even more spots which, although not accredited, are worth a visit for anyone wishing to see the sky in its unfiltered form.
