Traveling by air has many inconveniences and headaches, but perhaps nothing can set a traveler’s teeth on edge quite like the prospect of spending the night in an airport terminal. Whether it’s to catch a flight first thing the next morning or due to an unexpected connection delay, sometimes it just can’t be avoided. But that doesn’t mean it has to be totally miserable. In fact, with a few tweaks to your routine, you can be easily prepared for a night at the airport.
The best remedy for some of the common problems with staying in the airport overnight is a well-packed carry-on. A small pillow — a down blend if possible, as it is easily manipulated into a smaller shape — is a must. A blanket isn’t realistic, but a large scarf is versatile enough to be worn or packed. Be sure to keep toiletries in your carry-on, but keep the 3-1-1 rule in mind! A travel toothpaste, some face wipes and a small bottle of super moisturizing lotion will help you recharge in the morning.
Include a few healthy snacks, and don’t forget a water bottle. The chilly air of the airport will have you feeling dried out, so stay hydrated. Airport food is generally expensive, and chances are a lot of the better offerings will be closed for a long stretch. Throwing a few granola bars, dried fruit and even dark chocolate can help curb cravings that pop up in the middle of the night.
If you know in advance that a night at the airport is inevitable, or even highly likely, dress in comfortable layers. The airport will be cold, particularly in the early hours of the morning when crowds aren’t milling around. Hoodies, yoga pants and light but long-sleeved tops will make it easier to cuddle up without freezing. Make sure your shoes are comfortable, and even consider wearing slippers. The airport will be empty, so don’t worry too much about the judgment of fellow travelers. And if you are fretting about rolling up to the gate with bunny slippers on your feet and rocking pajamas, a sensible pair of boots and that huge scarf in your carry-on can make your night-in-the-airport look a little more polished the next morning.
The key to a night in the airport is getting some sleep, which can be difficult in the uncomfortable seats of the terminal. Everyone will find a different position comfortable, but your best friend in the fight against the dreaded straight back seats is being tired. Don’t drink caffeine, and if you are craving something hot, opt for a milk steamer, which will pack some flavor and offer the comfort of a warm cup in your hands. Walk around, explore the terminal and get the lay of the land for the next morning if you are feeling antsy. Then, when you are feeling tired, grab your pillow and hunker down!
