The annual Spicemas Carnival returns to Grenada, after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. The festival takes place Aug. 8–9, with a variety of events in the days and weeks prior.

Spicemas offers travelers a celebration of Grenadian culture and the country’s African, French, British and Caribbean heritage. On the Thursday and Friday before carnival, also known as Fantastic Thursday and Bacchanal Friday, Grenada’s top calypsonians, power soca and groovy soca artists compete for the coveted titles of Calypso, Soca and Groovy Monarch. On Pantastic Saturday, steel drum bands compete for Panorama Champion. On Sunday, travelers experience a Canboulay community event.

The Spicemas activities culminate Aug. 8 and 9, with the carnival celebration. On Monday, revelers adorned in paint, oil, tar, mud, molasses or chocolate make their way to the J’ouvert parade. Participants dressed in devil-inspired attire, also known as Jab-Jabs, parade through the streets chanting and beating drums as a tribute to their ancestors. Spicemas bands travel the parade route throughout the day and into the night. Carnival Tuesday features the Parade of the Bands, with partygoers dressed in full costumes.
