Japan is sometimes perceived as having a reserved culture, but there is plenty of nightlife around Tokyo that will put that notion to rest. The city isn’t quite as expensive as it was in the past, making it the perfect party destination for students traveling in East Asia.
If you’re a backpacker looking for a cheap place to stay, check out Khaosan Tokyo Guest House Ninja, a hostel that operates with the spirit of community. The main space has free WiFi and television, and the management often throw parties for residents. The rooms are dormitory-style, running ¥2,5000 per person for a four-bed room. Unfortunately, there are no doubles, but couples who need a little privacy can reserve a room at the Khaosan Tokyo Laboratory, with private rooms available featuring a hip, modern design and color scheme. Rates are usually ¥3,200.
Asia isn’t frequently listed as a clubbing destination, but Japan has quietly been building up a technically advanced club scene that rivals Europe. AgeHA is the city’s biggest club, with three dance floors, a swimming pool, and several bars and chill-out areas that can hold up to 5,000 people. If you want to see where the top international DJs perform in Tokyo, head to Womb, located in the trendy Shibuya district. Designed by the creators of New York’s Twilo, Womb has a top-notch sound and lighting system and regularly has a star-studded lineup with upcoming performances from Ritchie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Came & Crooked and Dubfire.
If you like to hit some bars before dancing, consider participating in the Tokyo Pub Crawl, popular with locals and tourists alike. Every Friday and Saturday, the Pub Crawl visits three to four bars and a club. Tickets cost ¥2,200 for guys and ¥1,700 for girls, taking care of cover charges, drink discounts and a free shot at every stop.
