A bagel is a bagel, right? Not when it comes to the unique Montreal-style bagels hot out of St. Viateur’s continuously operating ovens. Since 1957, St. Viateur has been a fixture in Montreal. Started by Jewish immigrants, the shop has stayed true to its original recipe and provides a singular Montreal experience.
The modest shop is teeming with bagels and overflowing with customers.Unlike their New York counterpart, Montreal bagels are dipped in honey water after they are formed and fired in a woodburning oven. St. Viateur tops their bagels with sesame seeds, raisins or poppyseeds. The bagels have a chewy texture and a slightly sweet flavors. Most Montreal bagels are smaller and have larger holes than New York bagels. The best way to enjoy these bagels is straight from the oven — ask for extra hot. Top them with butter or enjoy them on their own. The bagels are so popular that St. Viateur ships worldwide and opened a Bagel on Wheels food truck.
Although a Montreal-style bagel shop recently opened in New York City, there is no comparison between the authentic bagel experience. Customers can watch as bagels are shaped, rolled, baked and sent on an impressively long conveyor belt. Stop by St. Viateur on a frosty night and purchase a bag of piping hot bagels for a truly unique Montreal treat.
