Nestled at the foot of Table Mountain is the lively South African City of Cape Town. The “Mother City,” as its often referred to, is a unique metropolis lush with an assortment of beaches, vineyards and even a species of Arctic birds known as Jackass Penguins. However, like any major city, there are a number of dangers travelers need to be aware of.
In The City
Street beggars are common throughout Cape Town — many being children that visitors feel inclined to help. However, many of these children work for adults who they give most, if not all, of their earnings. Other problems include forged rands and ATM robberies. This probably goes without saying, but travelers should never accept help from strangers when operating an ATM. A good rule to follow is to try not to stand out or look like a tourist. Foreigners are obvious prey for muggers and grifters.
Townships
While the city might generally be safe, venturing away from Cape Town and to its neighboring townships can sometimes be a problematic. Those not familiar with the area should take the advice of their tour guide regarding where and where not to travel. Sticking with the group is ideal, but when visitors must explore on their own, they should research the area in advance. Additionally, the advice of taxi drivers is best left ignored. These people are not qualified guides and sometimes have their own ulterior motives.
