Held sacred by the world’s three major religions, Jerusalem is a vibrant, compelling and historically complex metropolis that sits in the heart of Israel. Since its founding in 1948, Jerusalem and the lands surrounding it have experienced a myriad of conflicts and power struggles. But despite its violent history, Jerusalem is safer now than it has ever been, and sees more than 3.5 million tourists per year. Still, the city can prove hazardous to those unfamiliar with its peculiarities.
When visiting Jerusalem, you’ll want to tread carefully in certain areas, such as the West Bank. The West Bank is a Palestinian territory located in the northeastern part of Israel, and extends into East Jerusalem. It is recommended tourists not visit the West Bank alone for fear of getting lost in Palestinian-controlled territory. However, it is relatively safe to travel through the West Bank in an organized group.
Think of Jerusalem as a giant airport, and never leave your bag unattended. Having lived under the constant threat of terrorism for decades, the city takes every precaution necessary to protect its citizens. If you leave your bag on a park bench, in a restaurant or on a bus, it will be reported, confiscated and likely destroyed by the police bombing squad.
In a similar vein, be prepared for security checks when entering malls, hotels, cinemas and car parks, as well as the constant presence of firepower. Every Israeli citizen is required to serve in the Israeli Defense Forces and soldiers carry their weapons everywhere.
Lastly, pay particular attention to pickpockets on holy days — especially in Old City. Holidays such as Passover and Sukkot attract larger than average crowds, which pickpockets use to their advantage.
