Taking a trip overseas to study can be an enlightening experience. It provides a chance to experience a different culture, while providing a similar education to something back home. For those looking to study abroad in England, here are some things to consider, as life is going to be a bit different across the pond.
First and foremost, it is beneficial to know about England’s place in the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom of Great Britain comprises England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Generally, each nationality prefers to be referred to as English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish; however, British is also accepted, though some Scots may have issue with that after failing to gain independence from the U.K.
Though it might seem strange, police in England and throughout the United Kingdom (known as “bobbies”) do not carry firearms. This is an important aspect of British culture, and understanding that bobbies operate with the minimum force necessary, policy is important. Even pepper spray is considered a firearm.
In terms of style, most of Europe is considerably different from North America. Yoga pants, sweatpants and backpacks are a norm for students in North America, but in England this is not the case. Dress nicely, and bring books in a purse (girls) or a messenger (guys). Tight-fitting clothing is popular in England, among both men and women, and everyday clothing is more professional.
Be prepared to learn some new slang. For example, quid is money, say “P” instead of pence, chips are fries, crisps are potato chips and those are just a few examples. Adjusting to the language and culture will take time, but it will provide you with a unique life experience.
