Nicaragua is one the most beautiful Central American countries and known for its surf. Because the country is so close to the equator, the seasons are extremely distinct on when the best waves come through, so you must choose wisely. The best months for travel are usually the late summer months when the rainy season has not yet arrived and the south storms come through.
Nicaragua’s Pacific Coast takes a few days to drive from start to finish. Most coastal roads are extremely rough and rarely paved. Because of the rugged conditions and constant rain, a four-wheel drive vehicle is a must. Depending on how remote you want to be, the north and south Pacific Coast differ greatly in culture and style.
The north Pacific Coast is extremely remote, so be ready for jungle roads and a lot of wildlife. It’s extremely beautiful, but can be exhausting and dangerous. Pack plenty of water and food, and never bring anything with extreme value. To surf the north, you have to venture to the coast as early as possible. Asseradores is a favorite spot for many. It also has a cute little village just east with some of the best fresh fish and rum you can find.
The south is much more commercialized and easy to surf. Because Lake Nicaragua sits just east, it shoots strong offshore winds straight to the beach all day long. It’s a surfer’s paradise. Most hotels and hostels will offer WiFi and great amenities. Playa Iguana and its three famous breaks are the most popular. The barrels are endless, and always warm. You must stay in the resort to surf these breaks, so make sure to book early or continue south if you want to try some lesser-known spots.
