Mardi Gras showcases New Orleans at its best — and at times, its worst — all at once. The days leading up to the grand celebration bring multitudes of people to the streets for a slew of parades that are essentially enormous parties taking place on the sidewalks and medians (neutral ground in New Orleans parlance) around the city.
Take it from a local: Mardi Gras is an intense experience, even for the most laidback traveler or the most seasoned local. Here’s how to survive Mardi Gras — and the days leading up to it — in the Big Easy.
Pace yourself
Mardi Gras is a marathon, not a sprint. Don’t plan to kill your liver at the first parade, as you’ll probably attend several while you’re in town. They happen every day for a few days before Fat Tuesday, so be prepared for the long haul.
Plan ahead
Book hotels at least a year in advance, especially if you’re going to stay close to a parade route. Staying within walking distance of a major route is a great idea, as you’ll have a built-in parking spot and bathroom — both of which are at a serious premium at Carnival.
Be a minimalist
Don’t bring a purse or anything super expensive, like a fancy camera or a wallet full of cash. The less you have with you, the better, though you may want to bring collapsible chairs, picnic blankets and ice chests.
Dress comfortably
Costumes are a great idea, but be sure to wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be on your feet for a long time. Check the weather forecast, as Mardi Gras falls during an unpredictable time of year in New Orleans; it may be freezing, it may be sweltering and rain is always a possibility.
