Tips / Travel

The Thanksgiving holiday is one of the busiest travel times of the year. Don’t let flight delays, poor driving conditions and lost luggage ruin your mood. Here are some helpful tips for surviving Thanksgiving travel:

Travel Light

Instead of worrying about losing luggage to cancelations and missed connections, consider packing a carry-on bag. With many airlines charging for a checked bag, this option is easier on the wallet, too. For a short trip, exercise being mindful about the amount you pack. Consider shipping bulky items to your destination if necessary.

Pick the Best Days

The day before Thanksgiving is notoriously the worst for travel. Take some extra time off and fly on the Monday or Tuesday before. Depending on where you’re headed, think about leaving Thanksgiving Day. For the return trip, Friday tends to be the best option. Avoid Sunday travel if possible, as this day is usually busy.

Navigate the Airport

Choose non-stop flights if possible. Keep checking your flight status using the airline’s app and follow them on Twitter and Facebook. Additionally the app Flightview tracks the progress of your specific aircraft. For long layovers, download GateGuru for extensive information about your airport. Make sure your phone is fully charged and keep your charger handy for a quick power up at a free outlet or charging station.

Road Trip

For those driving to their destination, make sure your gas tank is full before hitting the road. Sign up for EZPass to avoid long lines at tollbooths. Bring snacks instead of buying expensive meals at rest stops. Traffic is likely, so download traffic app Waze before you go. The app provides real-time traffic and road information, as well as alternate routes.

Stay Home

Host Thanksgiving dinner at your house if you want to avoid travel altogether.
