Generally speaking, The Bahamas is a place dense with lively culture and activity. However, for those who wish to escape the hustle and bustle and noise of crowded islands like Nassau, Big Major Cay might be the place to go.
This uninhabited, quiet slice of solitude is the frequent destination of yachters who wish to unwind and listen to the ocean waves crash ashore. Visitors may even make a few new friends, as the island is home to more than 20 wild pigs. These pigs and piglets survive on what is known as ‘pig beach,’ independently, due to the island’s three fresh water springs. Guests of the island need not be afraid of the pigs, however. In fact, they might find themselves swimming side-by-side or running along the beach with one of these friendly beasts.
For those who don’t own a yacht, there are other alternatives. Many visitors of the island opt to fly from Nassau to Big Major Cay’s neighbor, Staniel Cay — know for its yacht club and nightlife. Many travelers even decide to spend their entire vacation in at Staniel Cay as an alternative to the commercial and overcrowded Nassau. From here, small motorboats can be rented for as low as $200 per day.
