Fans of the TV show Shark Tank may have seen an entrepreneur present a startup called Swimply, an app that allows users to rent time at a nearby private pool at someone’s home. A veritable Airbnb for pools, Swimply users form agreements with pool owners that involve renting out the pool, patio space and even bathrooms for an afternoon of fun in the sun when the pool isn’t being used by the owners.
Owners can set an hourly rate based on the size of their pool and whether guests will have access to amenities like pool toys and a bathroom. The average cost of renting a private pool for public use is $45 per hour.
Each pool advertised on Swimply’s app has been inspected by pool service companies and approved based on hygiene and safety.
The app fills the gap for private pool owners who aren’t always using their pools and who want to make a little extra cash, as well as for non-pool owners looking for ways to cool off that don’t involve forking over a fortune to spend an afternoon at a hotel or rooftop pool.
Swimply is currently available in 26 states across the country, as well as select locations in Canada and Australia.
