Vacation excursions can sometimes feel overused and predictable. Sometimes, travelers wish to experience something truly original. With the Philippine Mermaids Swimming Academy, you can become a majestic siren of folklore for a short time.
Founded in 2012, this academy was created to give students a medium in which to express their creativity and hone their swimming. The class is taught in the water — from rivers to pools to oceans depending on the location — and caters to all ages and genders. Students wriggle their way into their tails, made of elastic fabric and begin learning the art of mermaiding. By utilizing their core muscles to gyrate their body and kick their legs, they can move like an animal of the ocean while simultaneously getting a workout.
Classes range in price from PHP 1,500 (about $33) to PHP 3,500 (about $78), and are taught in Boracay, Cebu and four different locations in Manila. While the course is most commonly taught in groups, private sessions are available for travelers looking for a one-on-one experience.
In addition to the standard mermaid courses, the Mermaid Academy also offers courses in mermaid snorkeling, scuba diving and fitness, as well as “The Modern Mermaid,” which involves discovering the ocean depths with a water scooter.
For those looking to stay dry, they also offer a personal mermaid photo shoot with a professional photographer.
All that is required is a basic knowledge of swimming and an adventurous spirit.
