One of the best gifts you can give is the gift of song. Strap on your ukulele and pack your bags for Jamaica, because Projects Abroad has a great voluntourism missions for those of you who consider yourselves musically inclined.
The volunteer opportunity involves teaching students at disadvantaged schools around Jamaica how to develop an appreciation and awareness for music. Many of them lack access to instruments and other resources, so you’ll be helping them to explore a rich new cultural world.
They have opportunities ranging from elementary to high school students, so you’ll have a choice as to which might best suit your abilities. Be aware, however, the resources and space in these schools are small, so you’ll often be teaching classes of more than 30 kids at a time. It’s not for the faint of heart.
You’ll need to be knowledgeable in both theoretical and practical music knowledge. Providing the kids with an outlet, tutoring them for choral practice and teaching them how to sing and play instruments are all part of the package.
The project runs most of the year while school is in session, but not during the summer months between July and September. You’ll be placed with a host family, where at least one member speaks English, so you don’t have to worry about finding your own accommodations.
Prices start at $2,990 for two weeks and go up from there.
