It’s quite an understatement to say everyone is constantly plugged in — whether they listen to music on their smartphone on the bus or do work on their laptop at a café — technology has become a part of everyday life. Countless studies link constant use of technology to elevated stress levels and some suggest too much screen time lowers interpersonal interaction. Expedia reports almost two-thirds of Americans check email while on vacation.
Leave the electronics at home, take a chance to unplug and savor a tech-free experience. For the truly adventurous or technology-addicted, pick a new travel location with limited Internet access. Use vacation as a true getaway; visit a scenic natural park, relax at the beach or tour a new city
According to information technology company Modis, taking a break from screens may increase productivity, reduce stress levels and improve mood. Tech-free travel can be rejuvenating and restorative — just be sure to alert friends and coworkers that you will be unavailable to avoid panicked calls and a backlog of emails.
Vacation should be a time to get away from the mundane and experience the beauty and culture of a new place — something that is quite difficult to do while staring at a screen.
