The hoodie is an essential part of the American wardrobe. The modern style first appeared in the 1930s, when Champion made hooded sweatshirts for laborers working in the cold weather. By the 1970s, it was entering the mainstream consciousness thanks to its adoption by hip-hop fashion and an iconic appearance in the film Rocky.
Two decades later, the clothing has been championed by every fashion label there is, from luxury designer Giorgio Armani to skateboard brand Quicksilver. The latest company to enter the game is American Giant, which claims to have made the greatest hoodie in the world. The $89 zip-up is made of heavyweight cotton, which is rare and much higher quality than the polyester blends you usually find in cheaper sweatshirts.
American Giant hired a former industrial designer from Apple to make this hoodie, and it shows in the sweatshirt’s various design innovations. The cut is fit to hug your chest and taper around your stomach, while stretchy side panels allow you to have arm mobility and prevent it from stretching out. With all of these great features, the sweatshirt has become incredibly popular and American Giant is struggling to keep up with demand.
