Northern California’s redwoods — some of the oldest and tallest trees in the world — are protected in a series of state and national park parcels co-managed and easily accessible for day hikes and weekend camping trips. The parks protect inland forests of incredibly complex and lush ecosystems, along with open prairie where elk roam and beaches fill with colorful tide pools.
Among the best spots to visit is Howland Hill Road through Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. The dirt road leaves from a Crescent City, Calif., neighborhood and veers off into a swath of enormous trees hugging the edge of the road, which at times is narrow enough for only one vehicle. Hikes abound along the road, so find a place to pull over and head off for a walk in the woods.
Driving south on Highway 101, you’ll pass numerous beaches south of Crescent City. Enderts Beach is a popular spot for catching florescent pink and blue anemones in tide pools nestled among the rocks.
North of Klamath, veer off Highway 101 to take the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, a 10-mile drive that parallels 101. This slower alternative passes numerous redwoods, visible from the car, as well as trailheads for hiking.
Fern Canyon is a deep gulch lined with ferns located farther south, in the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. It’s a bit off the beaten path but worth a detour if you have time.
