The culinary scene in La Paz is developing rapidly and there are now plenty of options for visitors, including cuisines from around the world.
Bolivian street food can be quite tasty, but it is not the healthiest or the most hygienic in La Paz. There are plenty of restaurants which merit your attention, serving delicious food out of the cold and polluted air. To get a taste of the local cuisine head to Rendezvous, which offers Bolivian specialties like llama steak in an inviting atmosphere.
Vegetarian options can be quite tough to find throughout Bolivia, so make the most of the buffet at Restaurante Vegetariano Armonia. Carnivores, perhaps spoiled by Argentinian beef on a longer trip around South America, can get their fix at El Arriero, which serves meat imported from Bolivia’s southern neighbor.
The wave of Vietnamese restaurants has now reached Bolivia in the shape of Vinapho, which offers bowls of pho and rice rolls made with authentic ingredients. MagicK Cafe Cultural targets the backpacker crowd with its funky, vintage interior and varied menu. The young, trendy clientele can be seen sipping on microbrew beer as they nibble on the fusion cuisine.
For a truly gourmet experience, head down to Gustu in the well-heeled Zona Sur. Claus Meyer, co-found of Denmark’s world-renowned Noma restaurant, opened Gustu in 2013. Sample the best of Meyer’s contemporary use of locally-sourced ingredients with a five-, seven- or 15-course taster menu.
