Situated on South Michigan Avenue and facing Grant Park, Hilton Chicago is not only a great place to stay while visiting the city — it also offers frequent getaway deals and the location makes it an ideal starting point if you’re looking to branch out from the cluster of hotels along Magnificent Mile.
The hotel itself has its fair share of history, hosting every president from Harry Truman to Barak Obama. During World War II, the hotel was bought by the U.S. Army to be used as housing for the military until it was sold as a hotel again in 1944. Hilton Chicago has changed hands several times throughout the near century it’s been in business, but its numerous charms remain the same.
The guest rooms are standard in size and décor — nothing out of the ordinary — but the lakeview rooms offer a picturesque view, particularly in the summer, and you can book a room with dual bathrooms, a handy option you may not know you need until you try it out.
The meeting and event spaces are lovely. The Normandie Lounge features seating crafted from the lounge’s namesake, a World War II Army ship, and can seat 700. The Grand Ballroom is a showstopper, draped in extravagance, and has hosted countless celebrity parties, including one of the hotel’s first events — a lush party and dinner in honor of Charles Lindbergh and his trans-Atlantic flight.
Hilton Chicago is an easy walk from the Field Museum of Natural History, the John G Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium and Soldier Field, all great attractions for new visitors. If you’re visiting during the summer or holiday season, you can often catch a great view of the fireworks show off Navy Pier from the vicinity. Of course, you can always practically walk right out the front door of the hotel into Grant Park for a morning jog or a leisurely after-dinner stroll.
