Traveling outdoors and experiencing nature can be a rewarding experience. However, if caught unprepared and underdressed in strong precipitation, the results may be uncomfortable. It is important to learn the proper techniques to staying dry before venturing out into the wilderness.
Pack Your Clothes in Plastic Bags
If the forecast predicts heavy rain, consider compressing your clothes in standard zip-lock bags to keep them air tight and damp-free. Covering the exterior of your pack in a plastic trash bag helps to keep all of your personal items dry, and if you plan on camping overnight, make sure you use a trash bag to cover your sleeping bag.
Waterproof Your Boots
Toes and feet are often the first to lose heat when cold. For this reason, it is important to waterproof all boots and hiking shoes. Gaiters that cover the ankle and shoe can also come in handy.
Bring the Right Hat
Most of the heat in the human body is lost through the head. A good way to prevent this is by wearing the proper hat for both controlling temperature and protecting against heavy rain. Stocking or cotton hats are normally poor choices, but those with water-resistant materials like nylon will not absorb water.
Make Sure Your Clothes are Breathable
Soft shell raincoats and rain pants are a much more manageable choice than heavy rubber or nylon rain gear. Articles of clothing like these are breathable and let unwanted interior moisture out. They also dry off quicker by the campfire.
