The Tiny Paradise of Andorra

History

So maybe you know Andorra is a tiny country, high in the Pyrenees between France and Spain. Maybe you know that the entire country is about one-fifth the size of Rhode Island (181 square miles). But what you might not know is that it is a traveler’s paradise, renowned for its skiing and shopping. But with the Pyrenees literally outside every door in the country, Andorra is opening up to a world of tourism potential.

Only two roads lead to Europe’s highest capital city, Andorra la Vella — one from France and one from Spain. But that doesn’t stop more than 10 million visitors each year taking advantage of the duty-free shopping and the pristine, mountain environment.

The country is crisscrossed with nature trails and hiking, like the Valley of Comapedrosa Natural Park and Sorteny Valley Park. Ecotourism is a huge draw, as are the country’s cycling routes.

But Andorra also has its share of culture. It is home to the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley UNESCO World Heritage site and two others on the tentative list. The Casa de la Val was constructed in 1580 and served as Andorra’s parliament building since 1702.

Andorra is not a member of the European Union, but it benefits from being a trade member. They also use the euro, so you don’t have worry about changing money when you go.

If you’re looking for something unique, high up in the mountains where you can find world-class skiing, hiking and shopping all without setting foot in a car, Andorra is the place for you.

This year, the Northern Lights put on quite the display across Ireland, but don’t think these lights are the only thing you can see in Ireland. In fact, many spots across the country provide some of the best opportunities to stargaze thanks to low levels of light pollution. Ireland has three International Dark Sky Parks and even more spots which, although not accredited, are worth a visit for anyone wishing to see the sky in its unfiltered form.
