Golf might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Bolivian capital of La Paz, but the South American city is home to the highest course in the world.
Arriving in La Paz by plane is worthy of a health warning, with officials indicating altitude sickness may affect some tourists who arrive at El Alto International Airport, situated at 4,000 meters above sea level. While slightly lower, at 3,318 meters above sea level, those who are keen to play a round at La Paz Golf Club may want to give themselves a few days to acclimate before teeing off.
Head to the wealthy southern side of town into the stunning mountains, which make for an almost unbelievable backdrop to your sporting exploits. As you inevitably stop to catch your breath on the way around, drink in the imposing mountains and huge trees, but remember to get your head back in the game because the course is not an easy one.
Able golfers will enjoy the challenge of a course arranged among tall trees, and unforgiving drop offs mean wayward drives may result in lost balls. Less-experienced players may want to tee off from the ladies tees in order to avoid too many mishaps.
Although the course takes the title of the highest in the world, it does not simply trade off that novelty. It is well maintained, with knowledgeable caddies and well-built facilities. A round will set you back $58 from Tuesday to Friday, rising to $81 on the weekend. Club hire is around $25 and a caddy costs $14.50. Overall it isn’t a cheap day out, but it’s an experience not to be missed.
