Each year, the National Trust for Historic Preservation releases a list of historic spots around the country it deems “at risk for destruction or irreparable damage.” This year’s list includes 11 spots ranging from single structures to cultural neighborhoods to cemeteries.

“This year’s list of the nation’s most endangered historic places is a portfolio of sites that are nearly as diverse as the American experience itself,” said Jay Clemens, interim president and CEO, National Trust for Historic Preservation. “The places on this list come in all forms, from individual residences to entire neighborhoods, and are located across the country from small communities to urban streetcorners and rural landscapes. The diversity of sites on the 2023 list — and the stories behind them — reflect the complexities and challenges that have always been part of what it means to be American but have not always received the attention they deserve. Losing any of them would diminish us all.”

The full list includes:

  • Osterman Gas Station, Peach Springs, Arizona
  • Little Santo Domingo, Miami, Florida
  • Pierce Chapel African Cemetery, Midland, Georgia
  • Century and Consumers Buildings, Chicago, Illinois
  • West Bank of St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana
  • Holy Aid and Comfort Spiritual Church (Perseverance Benevolent and Mutual Aid Society Hall), New Orleans, Louisiana
  • V. Hull Home and Studio, Kosciusko, Mississippi
  • Henry Ossawa Tanner House, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Philadelphia Chinatown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Charleston’s Historic Neighborhoods, Charleston, South Carolina
  • Seattle Chinatown-International District, Seattle, Washington
