Destinations / Europe

Dreaming of a Roman holiday, but would prefer to see the Italy other travelers don’t? Want to avoid the major crowds you’ll find in Rome and Venice? If so, you might want to pick an Italian destination not on this list.

Audley Travel recently analyzed data to uncover which Italian cities get the most interest from U.S. travelers. The top 10, in descending order of popularity, included Rome, Milan, Venice, Naples, Florence, Trapani, Como, Bologna, Palermo and Verona.

Of course, these destinations are popular for a reason, as Alicia Welsman, regional product manager for Italy, Audley Travel, noted: “Rome is known as the Eternal City for a reason. It’s been a European center of art and culture for millennia and its long history makes it unique on the continent. It’s a great destination whether you’re looking for remarkable food, ancient ruins, Renaissance art, cutting-edge fashion, Catholic treasures or even simply la dolce vita.”

With that in mind, if you’ve yet to visit Italy, you may want to start off with the top contenders on this list. Then, once you’ve seen what all the fuss is about, consider visiting some of the lower-ranked destinations or go off the list completely.
