While Medellin has a lot of the hype when it comes to Colombian party destinations, Cartagena has quietly become one of the best South American cities for wild nightlife. Many know Cartagena as the setting of the infamous scandal involving President Obama’s secret service, where they found themselves in a world of trouble for indulging too heavily in the festivities of the area. Between the warm waters, smooth beaches, colorful cityscape and the parties that are happening 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Cartagena is a great place to give a soon-to-be married friend his final send-off. Groups can even stay in one of the many colonial mansions instead of an ordinary hotel for their visit.
Among the various nightlife options is Café del Mar — an enormous outdoor bar area that overlooks the Caribbean Sea. Drinks are served as early as 5 p.m. here. For others, Café Havana and La Movida are the places to go if dancing, live music and rum are preferred.
Friends can also move their bachelor party to the beaches during the daytime for some kitesurfing. Just around the corner from Café del Mar is the Cartagena Kitesurf School where visitors can learn the precise art of this popular regional watersport.
Others may enjoy exploring the historic district of the city, admiring the various unique buildings painted in bright orange, blue, yellow and pink colors, before getting a bite to eat at a local café. Or perhaps visitors can travel away from the city and check out the enormous Castillo San Felipe — an old castle from which the entire city is visible.
