There are certainly no shortages of temples, or wats, to choose from in Thailand, but the Tiger Cave Temple holds a special place in my heart. Not only is it unique, it’s also daunting.

The Tiger Cave Temple consists of more than just a giant statue and building. When you arrive, you’ll actually find a few different sites to check out. For starters, the actual Tiger Cave is a fascinating area where you’re asked to silently pray before walking around and looking at all the statues and a tiny cave where a tiger was said to reside. You can even see paw prints in certain areas. One small note of discontent was when they practically force you into donating money to walk around. It was frustrating, but they only ask for a couple of dollars.

If you’ve never heard of the Tiger Cave Temple, just know the real draw lies at the top of a very steep climb. There are more than 1,200 steps you must climb before reaching the summit and the main statue and temple. These aren’t your house’s steps, either. They’re steep, occasionally requiring you to use your hands to get up.

Along the way you’re likely to meet a few monkeys who’ll happily try and steal your food or drink if you let them. Once you get to the top, you have one of the best views of all of Thailand overlooking Krabi.

Hang around for a while, pray if you’d like and chill with the dogs that seem to make their home at the top. The trip up is grueling, but it’s totally worth it.
