Airbnb changed the way many people travel. Spending a night in a stranger’s home has become commonplace. With that comes plenty of privacy risks. Here are some ways to keep from being exposed in a host’s home.
Look for Cameras
Airbnb hosts are required to disclose any cameras they have in their homes. While you can’t force them to turn them off in many instances, it’s good to know where they are so you don’t do something regrettable like undress in front of them.
Secure Your Computer
Using a stranger’s WiFi is always risky. Protect your computer by using a VPN, use private browsers and keep your antivirus software up to date. When in doubt, it’s always a great idea to bring along your own portable WiFi network if you can.
Take Everything With You
When you leave the room to explore for the day, don’t leave anything valuable behind. Passports, IDs, computers and other devices all have information that can be used against you. Take these with you when you go or keep them locked up safely where they can’t be accessed.
Stay Sober
Sketchy Airbnb hosts will use alcohol to bring down your barriers. It’s okay to have a couple of drinks, but be sure to keep your wits about you. Also, don’t accept any alcohol you didn’t buy yourself.
