Tips for Backpacking Washington’s Olympic Coast

Washington State’s Pacific Coast is wild and scenic, with the best possibilities for exploration coming along the strip protected by Olympic National Park.Here, rather than the development of hotels and private homes, the coast maintains its untouched state, with giant seastacks soaring above tide pools teaming with colorful sea life. Beachcomb for sea glass, hunt for ancient petroglyphs and watch for sea otters and sea lions from the pristine beaches.

 

The best way to experience this remote section of the coast is to plan a backpacking trip. Plan your route first using the Washington Trails Association’s suggestions, as well as tips from the National Park Service.

 

Once you’ve decided on a route, determine whether permits are necessary by contacting the NPS or make plans to get a first come, first served spot. You’ll need to determine whether your route is impacted by high tide and what time that occurs. You will also need to find out whether campfires are permitted or forbidden at the spots you’re camping. All of this information is available on the NPS’s Olympic National Park website.

 

It’s important to be prepared for any type of weather on the coast. In summer, the area can see four seasons in one day, with hot, sunny weather and cold rain occurring one after the other. Bring warm clothes, dress in layers and avoid cotton. Be sure to use a bear canister to protect your food from raccoons and foxes.
