Choosing the right tour guide can be hard. You never know who is looking to help you explore the city versus who is just looking to make a quick buck. Here are a few tips to help you get started.
Look for reviews. Previous tourists will be able to help you find the best guides. Seek out reviews that laud the guide as knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Personality and experience can go a long way in making a tour more fun.
Find a licensed guide. Local governments have a vested interest in making sure tourists enjoy their city. Many of them are licensed professional tour guides who have a wealth of knowledge in the area and can get the best insights. Find a tour guide who is locally licensed so you know they know what they’re doing.
Pick their brains. A reliable tour guide will be happy to answer questions before you arrive. Make sure they know the area well by throwing a few at them that might be tricky to answer. If they seem knowledgeable and happy to talk about their city, you can bet they’ll be a great asset during the tour.
Opt for something quirky. Sometimes the best tours boast the oddest themes. While it’s fine to walk around all of the popular spots in town, guides offering unique experiences tend to have a better idea of what makes the city great. Night walking tours, historical ghost tours and beer tours are all great alternatives to the norms.
