Safety

With the proliferation of the Internet and camera technology, urban exploration has really taken off in popularity, with new adventures trying to find cool spots before anyone else. If you’re interested in doing some sneaking around, follow these tips to stay safe.

Know Your Target

Buildings, tunnels, metro stations, anything remote or abandoned can be an interesting place to explore. After you’ve picked your target, it’s a good idea to get a lay of the land. Some places might be dangerous, some might have people there, so do some research and scope the place out before heading in.

Beware Of The Law

You might be trespassing on private property, which could end with anything from a slap on the wrist to a fine to probation, and in some cases it could even result in jail time. There might also be security who may or may not be cool with you looking around, so be aware of the risks you’re taking on this adventure. Believe it or not, there are some places where urban exploration can be done legally, just be sure to call yourself a “photographer” when asking for permission.

What Your Step

If the place is abandoned, it might not be structurally sound. The last thing you want is to fall through the floor in a remote area, so watch your step and pay attention to the structure and weather. Collapsed roofs probably means there’s water damage inside, and you never know what kind of animals might be living there.

Look Your Best

You might be trespassing, but you probably won’t want to be wearing your N.W.A. shirt when the cops roll in. Wear boots and jeans, but try and cover piercings and tattoos, anything that would make you look suspicious as a trespasser.
