Renting a car overseas can be a great way to get around, but it isn’t always as simple as walking into an airport rental agency and asking for the keys. Here are some things to keep in mind before trying to drive.
Get Licensed
Having a license in the United States doesn’t guarantee you can drive overseas. In fact, most countries require you to get an international permit. It doesn’t cost much and is simple to get. Driving without one can lead to steep fines or jail time.
Practice Driving
Pick a remote area and practice driving before taking to city roads. Sometimes they drive on the opposite side and in some countries the signs and laws are more like suggestions. You need to be absolutely comfortable behind the wheel or you might end up causing a wreck.
Get Insured
You wouldn’t drive around America without insurance and you shouldn’t do it overseas. As a foreigner you’re likely to be found at fault no matter the circumstances, so protect yourself every way you can.
Smaller Is Better
Large SUVs and vans are only popular in the United States. The streets tend to be narrow overseas, so you’ll want to rent a car smaller than you might be used to driving. Whatever you do, avoid renting out a large vehicle that’s going to have trouble fitting into a small parking spot.
