Tips / Travel

Going to see your local symphony might be intimidating for someone used to rock bands. While it looks like a stuffy affair, you don’t need to be a classical music aficionado to appreciate the sound. Follow these tips to make the most of your time.

Find Your Sound

Orchestras sometimes focus on a particular style or play a variety of music. If you want to hear the classics, try to find a Masterworks performance. If you like contemporary stuff, look for Pops. It’s not uncommon for an orchestra to play music based on a particular artist or movie.

Dress Right

The dress code depends on the event. Business casual will do just fine for Pops series, but formalwear will be required for Masterworks.

Arrival

Doors typically open 60–90 minutes before the start of the performance. Patrons should plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before. Most venues allow late arrivals, but you’ll have to wait for a pause in the performance before the usher lets you in.

Keep Quiet and No Pictures

You’re obviously not allowed to use smartphones for pictures or video. Talking and humming are also frowned upon and, if you have children, you should check ahead of time whether they’re allowed. In the wintertime, many venues offer free cough drops around the lobby; just remember to unwrap them in advance.

Learn When and How to Clap

Many classical pieces are divided into movements that have a short pause between them. Sometimes it can be confusing for people unfamiliar with the music, so hold back until the seasoned listeners start clapping. Don’t do it in front of your face. Place your hands slightly to the left with small, brisk claps.
