Tips / Travel

The craft beer movement has arrived and is here to stay. With a bevy of craft breweries popping up all over the country, ordering a simple beer can be daunting and unfamiliar. Follow these steps so you can enjoy the perfect libation for your palette.

Know your style

Do you prefer a lighter bodied and crisp lager or a heavier, fuller bodied ale? Do you like an easy finish, or a long heavy one? Do you prefer a nitro (mouthy, creamy feel) or enjoy the bitterness of hops? These are good beginning questions to guide you through your craft beer journey.

Try something new

Pale wheat beers are some of the most popular and delicious beers on the market. Belgian-style IPAs are different, complex and interesting. Imperial stouts are nearly a meal in themselves. Go beyond your comfort zone and you might find something you love.

Don’t let names scare you off

Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale. Ommegang Gnomegang. Modus Hoperandi. Craft breweries have a lot of fun and creative freedom naming their beer. Have a good sense of humor and open mind about the beer behind the name.

Ask for a sample

Don’t be afraid to ask your bartender for a quick taste of a beer you have your eye on. As long as you don’t abuse this privilege, almost all bars and breweries will let you taste the beer free of cost.

Try a flight

If you are torn between several selections or simply enjoy variety, inquire whether or not they offer flights of beer for a fixed price. It’s a great way to try a few, then commit to a pint or growler of your favorite.
