Traveling in the best of circumstances can be stressful, but early morning travel is in a class all its own. There is nothing quite like having to roll out of bed after a fitful and short night of sleep, only to hop in the car or on the subway to make it to the airport before most of the city is even awake. But even though it’s not going to be fun, you can take a few easy steps to make it a lot less stressful.
Pack ahead
Don’t leave anything until the last minute. Plan your morning so that you don’t need to use a blowdryer, and either use a spare toothbrush or keep a travel one in your bag. This way your essentials will be ready to go when you are, rather than requiring extra brain power to make sure you don’t forget them.
Have grab-and-go breakfast ready
Donuts, pre-packaged iced coffee, microwaveable breakfast sandwiches — make it easy for yourself by putting them in an easy to see place in the kitchen. Do the same with any munchie food you want to have with you on the flight so you don’t have to stop on your way out of town or wait in lines once you get to the airport.
Opt for comfort
Not that you have to wear your pajamas to the airport, but don’t stress about looking your best. Yoga pants, warm sweaters and foot-friendly shoes will make the trip a little bit more enjoyable.
Clean before you leave
There is nothing worse than having to scramble to find something before you leave. To avoid this, use the week leading up to your trip to get your house in order. Tidy up, and make sure anything you might need is together and easy to find. Another huge plus: You’ll come home to a clean apartment or house.
