You’re about to take a trip and don’t know what to pack. This is a common problem, but for the traveling photographer, it’s crucial to pack smart and light. Follow these tips to ensure you’re prepared for capturing the perfect shot on the road.
Research
Before you go, do some research on the destination. What is the weather like? In rainy climates, a weather-sealed camera or rain cover will be necessary. For extreme temperatures, hot or cold, you will need to pack extra batteries, as the temperature will affect battery life. What activities will you participate in on your trip? Depending on what type of events or locations you intend to see, be sure to pack the correct lens. One zoom and one prime lens should cover just about anything you want to capture. A single, fixed lens offers less flexibility, but may be all you need on your trip.
Stick to What You Know
Instead of bringing the new gear you recently purchased, stick to what you know. While using the latest gadgets may be tempting, if there’s an item you’re unfamiliar with, it’s best to not waste the packing space.
Keep It Simple
Pack only the items you absolutely need. This starts with a simple camera bag. Domke, Think Tank and Acme Made offer a variety of different bag sizes. Try to limit the contents. For most photographers a DSLR (digital single-lens reflex camera), alternate lens and daily accessories are adequate. Cut down on the accessories you bring if possible.
