The Okavango Delta is a natural wonder.
A vast inland river delta, its sprawling grassy plains flood seasonally, creating entirely different habitats at different times of the year. At times, it’s a lush, watery plain with islands and waterways and, during its dry season, it bears an almost unrecognizable apocalyptic appearance. The entire region is rich with wildlife including hippos, elephants, crocodiles in the wetlands, and, on its dry land, lions, leopards, giraffes and rhinos.
Visiting the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an incredible experience but one to be taken seriously, requiring preparation and care.
First and foremost, be prepared for the type of camp in which you plan to stay. Lodges located at permanent water sites offer boating and canoe safaris throughout the year, but camps in seasonally flooded areas may not always offer water activities if it’s dry season. Make sure you’re clear on whether you’re staying in a wet or dry camp, and the types of excursions on which you’ll embark, and pack accordingly. The best ways to get up close with the region’s wildlife are bush walks and mokoro boat rides.
Pack light, as you’ll likely be often on the go, but bring waterproof jackets, quick-dry clothing, loose layers to protect from sun and insects, a waterproof bag, binoculars and, from May to August, warm clothes as temperatures can drop to just above freezing.
It’s not uncommon for wild animals to wander through the lodge grounds, so be aware at all times, and adhere to all rules set by the guide or camp manager.
The Delta is one of Africa’s last remaining wildlife habitats, and it provides refuge to a large concentration of endangered species. Protecting the land’s animals is important, so always travel with a reputable tour company or private guide as they’re versed in the different species and know how to ensure the safety of the animals and human visitors.
