In the heart of Philadelphia, just around the corner from City Hall, lies the bustling Reading Terminal Market. Inside the skeleton of the old Reading Terminal train station, visitors can find this warehouse-style bazaar full of vendors selling just about everything — from fresh fruits, iced fish and bouquets of flowers to cheesesteaks and soul food.
Near the center of the enormous melting pot, among the glowing signs and droves of customers, is the world renowned DiNic’s. Although it might take hungry patrons a half hour to reach the front of the line, it is worth the wait. Father and son owners Tommy and Joey Nicolosi are ready to take orders and serve up their tasty treat.
Their famous roast pork sandwich, filled with potent sharp provolone and broccoli rabe, has every characteristic you’d want in a real city sandwich. It’s juicy, messy, overstuffed and has an incredible combination of flavors. The sandwich is so good, that Man Vs. Food’s Adam Richman crowned it the “Best Sandwich in America” in 2012.
DiNic’s also serves slow-roasted beef brisket and Italian-style pulled pork, homemade meatballs, Italian sausage and roast beef. After you get your sloppy, steaming sandwich, you might be able to find an open barstool around the stand. If all else fails, you can always stand and eat at one of the wall-mounted tables around the market.
