Sicily is teeming with ancient ruins from a number of historical periods. Here are some of the best ones to visit on your trip.
Valle dei Templi, Agrigento
The Valley of Temples is home to some of the best-preserved Greek temples found anywhere. It’s a huge archeological site, home to Roman ruins as well as Greek temples, and it will take a full day to look around.
Greek Theater, Taormina
The beautiful town of Taormina has lots to offer visitors, and the Greek Theater is one of the main attractions. It looks down over the sea and nearby Mount Etna, and it’s the second-largest ancient theater in Sicily.
Segesta
This archaeological park on the western tip of the island is a spectacular alternative to the Valle dei Templi. The main temple is incredibly well preserved, as is the ancient theater.
Piazza Armerina
This Roman palace, Villa Romana del Casale, is truly a sight to behold, and the mosaics are one of the best bits. Not only are they still in great condition, but the villa’s mosaics represent the largest collection of ancient Roman mosaics in the world.
Temples of Selinunte
Located in southern Sicily, this site is home to the ruins of an acropolis and five historic temples. Much of it was destroyed by invaders, but the remains are still impressive.
