Don’t judge a book by its cover — that is something to keep in mind when visiting the hundreds of windowless, vinyl siding adorned, ranch-style establishments that specialize in Arkansas fried catfish around the state. They may be dull on the outside, but these places serve some of the most delectable seafood throughout the American south. The state’s capital, Little Rock, is home to some of the best locations.
Grandpa’s Southern Catfish
At the aptly named Grandpa’s, the owners take pride in their corny sense of humor, with their motto, “If the Kernel fried chicken like we fry Catfish, he’d be a general!” Visitors can enjoy the bayou maritime aesthetic as they feast on their tasty fried seafood.
Uncle Dean’s Catfish and Such
The ambiance of Uncle Dean’s is not for everyone — with church choir music playing at all hours — but there’s no denying their catfish is heavenly. Visitors say their coleslaw is worth the pain as well.
Dondie’s White River Princess Restaurant
No place exemplifies the spirit of the Mississippi River better than Dondie’s White River Princess. Built inside an old beached riverboat, this restaurant pleases locals and visitors alike.
Flying Fish
Even with dozens of locally owned, home-cooked catfish dives across the city, many city residents still enjoy Flying Fish, an Arkansas catfish chain found throughout the area. The location in Little Rock can be found on President Clinton Avenue, where the menu features not only catfish, but also other seafood delights like po’boys and oysters.
Lassis Inn
With not much more than a counter and a beat-up jukebox, Lassis Inn emphasizes simplicity. Their Cajun fried catfish is served in a Styrofoam container, but is perhaps the best catfish in Little Rock. The Lassis Inn has a strict “no dancing” policy because, as legend has it, customers would repeatedly start moving and end up breaking the sink.

Apr 10, 2025Study Shows More Millennials Are Cruising
A new study from Cruisebound shows more millennials are cruising, as the average age of cruisers trends downward. The study discovered the largest portion of cruisers are ages 25 to 44, making up 45 percent of all cruise bookers. Seniors, aged 55 and up, currently only account for 26 percent of cruise bookers. The platform theorizes this trend in younger cruisers is brought about by cruise lines’ increasing offering of family-friendly experiences and shorter cruises that can be enjoyed over a long weekend.
