Land-locked Armenia is a remote country full of history, fascinating culture and phenomenal scenery. It’s not high on the lists of many tourists, but it should be. As a predominantly Christian nation, Armenia is full of historic and downright impressive monasteries. It would take ages to see all of them, but here are five tried-and-true favorites.
Khor Virap
Khor Virap is one of Armenia’s most popular monasteries, and it’s easy to see why. Historically, it’s where St. Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years, before curing the King of a disease. This event led to the conversion of Armenia as the world’s first Christian nation. You can still visit the chamber where St. Gregory was held — it’s small! On clear days, you can also see Mt. Ararat, where Noah supposedly landed his ark. The mountain is a treasured Armenian symbol, but it is located in Turkey.
Geghard
Geghard is a testament to the ability of humans to shape their landscape — the monastery is carved partially out of the surrounding mountain. Wandering around and examining the intricate, detailed carvings is not to be missed. It’s simply amazing.
Garni Temple
So, Garni isn’t actually a monastery, but it deserves a place on this list. Plus, it’s on the way to Geghard. It’s the country’s only Pagan temple, which is interesting enough, however, the scenery is also excellent. Much of Armenia is dry and arid, but Garni’s location is lush and green.
Tatev
Tatev’s complex is impressive, partially due to its massive size. It was built in the 9th century, and is located on the edge of a deep, narrow valley. This is another interesting monastery, with equally appealing scenery. There’s even a cable car, called the “Wings of Tatev,” that connects it with the neighboring village of Halidzor.
Noravank
Noravank blends in seamlessly with its surroundings. It’s set in a dramatic valley surrounded by cliffs, and is a visitor favorite for travelers in the country. The green hills and red rocks create a visually appealing contrast, and the monastery is filled with history. Be sure to stop at the museum to learn all about its past!
