Although its reputation is improving, Colombia remains a misunderstood destination, but there can be no arguing with the beauty of its beaches. Below you will find a selection of the best spots to take a dip in the Caribbean.
Palomino
At first glance the small roadside settlement of Palomino doesn’t look like much, but get away from the highway and you’ll find a magical beach. Be careful of the strong currents in the surprisingly violent sea, which attracts advanced surfers. Take an early morning stroll to catch a glimpse of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada which rises behind you, in stunning contrast to the tropical beach.
Sapzurro
The tiny village of Sapzurro sits right on the border with Panama, and is only accessible by boat. The lack of access makes it one of Colombia’s least-explored gems, and those who do make it there will not be disappointed.
Parque Tayrona
Just down the road from Palomino is the Tayrona National Park, which contains a series of spectacular beaches. Spend a couple of nights in the park, moving from beach to beach and swimming in some of the more sheltered coves.
Isla Mucura
West of the famous city of Cartagena is the tiny island of Mucura, which can be traversed in less than 10 minutes on foot. Nothing happens here, and you will quickly adjust to the circadian rhythm of rising with the sun and heading to bed shortly after a freshly-caught fish dinner.
El Cabo de la Vela
Situated in north of the country, el Cabo de la Vela marks the border between the sea and the desert, which makes for a simply astounding backdrop. The village is incredibly isolated near the border with Venezuela, and the local population make for great hosts. Be sure to enjoy a freshly caught lobster as you watch the sunset.
