Cancun

While you may think of Cancun as a spring break destination, visiting in the winter can mean bigger savings and fewer crowds. You can find many tourist-geared hotels in the central downtown area that offer budget rates, if you’re willing to forgo a bit of luxury. You’ll find weather in the 70s and 80s during January, with plenty of sunshine to get your fix before heading back to chilly, gray skies.

Belize

This tiny Central American country is perfect for the outdoor explorer and the beach bum alike. There are plenty of budget accommodation options, including vacation rentals right on the beach. Eco-conscious travelers can also find many eco-tourism opportunities in the country.

Dominican Republic

As a popular getaway for U.S. residents and a short plane ride from most major airport hubs, flights to the Dominican Republic can often fall within most travelers’ budgets. While the attractive beaches may be enough to draw you in, the island country is also a great destination for weddings, honeymooners and bachelor/bachelorette trips.

Costa Rica

A relaxing and lush tropical getaway, Costa Rica is a popular choice for many. If this tourism-driven destination has yet to be scratched off your travel bucket list, the winter months are a great time to change that. The dry season, which runs from December to April, means mild temperatures and the perfect weather to explore the vibrant topography.

American Southwest

While you may initially think finding warm weather in the winter months calls for international travel to a tropical destination, think again. The American Southwest can offer a variety of fun getaways just as popular with those in search of some sun. Las Vegas, Phoenix and even Houston can offer an affordable vacation with temperatures in the mild 50s and 60s — a definite welcome change from snow and ice!
