Fogo de Chão has become famous for its Brazilian-styled steakhouses around the world, but if you want a truly authentic churrascaria, head to São Paulo.
North Vila Nova
North Vila Nova is an expansion of the original North Grill, with this one located in the upscale Vila Nova Conceição neighborhood. This restaurant specializes in cuts from places like Australia and Japan, in addition to classic Brazilian meats, seafood and poultry.
Costelaria Moema
This one should be popular with American palates, serving eight different cuts of beef ribs, which are slow-roasted for 40 hours. Costelaria Moema also serves three kinds of matambre (flank steak), 14 sides and a large variety of sweet and savory wood-fired pizzas.
Templo da Carne: Marcos Bassi
Marcos Bassi might be the most famous name in beef, sharing his expertise of the churrascaria style on his radio show and selling his personally branded products in supermarkets. To get the true Marcos Bassi experience, visit the much-lauded Templo da Carne, which sells his signature bom-bom, a special cut from the heart of a rump steak.
Montana Grill
This establishment started 20 years ago by the brothers Chitãozinho and Xororó, the renowned Brazilian country music stars. Montana Grill eschews sophistication and focuses on an authentic country-style vibe. Located in the trendy Itaim Bibi neighborhood, visitors should come here for an intimate gaucho experience.
Rodeio
This restaurant is one of São Paulo’s first churrascarias. For years it was popular with the city’s elite before getting competition from newer steakhouses in recent years. Despite a decrease in popularity, Rodeio is still a top choice for an upscale churrascaria experience.
