The city of seafood and sangria isn´t particularly known for its sweeter fare, but you don´t have to look far for Barcelona´s sugar to accompany your café con leche.
Churros (con chocolat)
Fried dough in the form of plush strips, and a small vat of melted chocolate — what´s not to love? This traditional Spanish favorite can be consumed any time of the day, but Catalonians tend to nosh on churros in the morning, understanding the true meaning of ¨breakfast of champions.¨
Gelato
Italy´s pride and joy made its way to Spain and has become just as popular, with shops popping up around every corner. The mounds of colorful cream are piled high behind glass partitions, making it difficult to refrain from drooling. Cups and cones of one scoop start at just €2, but after one sample, you may be going back for more.
Crema Catalana
Spain´s version of crème brûlée is just as creamy as the French favorite, consisting of a vanilla-flavored custard base and covered with a hard layer that has been caramelized to a crispy consistency. The Catalans consider this a choice dessert to sample after a dinner of meat and seafood.
Crêpes
France may have put this dessert on the table, but Catalonia is right across the border and has latched onto the simplicity and popularity of this sweet (and savory) snack. Fill the thin pancake-like pastry with Nutella, fruit or other desserts, or make it a meal with meat and cheese.
Tiny Cakes
As you begin to meander through the streets of Barcelona, it will be tough not to notice the intricately designed cakes peering out from the windows of local bakeries. Bakers craft their small cakes with complete care and ensure each one is perfection, making it even tastier for the consumer.
