The popularity of music festivals exploded over the past decade or so, and it can be hard to choose which ones to attend. Here are five of the most interesting in Europe.
Exit Festival, Serbia
If you’ve ever wanted to party in a Serbian fortress, Exit is the perfect festival for you. The Petrovaradin Fortress towers over the city of Novi Sad and gives great views over the Danube River. The main action occurs inside the walls, where Serbian and international bands and DJs keep the crowd dancing until sunrise.
Benicassim, Spain
The seaside town of Benicassim plays host to a raucous selection of musical acts over three days in July. Cheat the searing Spanish heat by spending your days by the beach before heading into the arena to party all night.
Fusion Festival, Germany
Those with a taste for techno should do their best to get their hands on a ticket to Fusion. The only way to do so is to register for a lottery and hope you are one of the 60,000 lucky souls chosen at random. If your number comes up, you’ll get to see for yourself why people make the journey from all over the world.
Gottwood, Wales
Gottwood offers the best of underground house music in a spectacular setting on the rugged coast of Anglesey, Wales. The event has gone from strength to strength, attracting ever greater numbers of attendees, but managed to retain its attention to detail and friendly, accessible atmosphere.
Meadows in the Mountains, Bulgaria
This small festival comes at the start of festival season, offering a select group of revelers the chance to watch emerging performers strut their stuff against the spectacular backdrop of the Rhodopes Mountains. Get to Bulgaria for early June if you want to attend.
