There is no doubt Irish drinking culture can revolve around Guinness, whiskey and pub culture, but what does this mean and are there any other traditions, great or small, to keep in mind? Let’s start with what we know and that is the Irish are known for the elixir of Guinness and many different Irish whiskeys.
Guinness
Guinness is an Irish dry stout developed by a man named Arthur Guinness sometime in the 18th century. Needless to say, it has become popular. Grandmothers recommend it as a treatment for any number of ailments from a headache to melancholy. If a cup of tea won’t fix your problem, then a pint of Guinness will.
Whiskey
Whiskey is a spirit the Irish are known for quite rightly; traditional Irish whiskeys are bountiful and good. Everyone knows the brands Jameson and Bushmills, but there is also Glendalough and Tyreconnel worth a try if you enjoy it.
Toasts
Toasts are another fine tradition. Whether you are at a wedding, funeral or it is a Tuesday, a good toast is welcome.
The Puck Fair
The Puck Fair is one of the many fairs frequented by natives or tourists alike. The Puck Fair in Southwest Ireland takes place in Killorglin every year in August and is purported to be one of Ireland’s longest-standing fair traditions. The history of the fair has competing explanations, but generally has to do with a pre-Christian tradition of welcoming a good harvest in the fall.
Just Drink
Just drink is a tried and true Irish tradition. No need to drink to excess as the stereotype goes, just enjoy a drink and a chat, then call it a night.
