Whether you are looking for unspoiled Caribbean beaches or the chance to observe huge numbers of marine birds, the following islands each have their own special characteristics.

Ilha Grande, Brazil
No cars are allowed on this pristine island near Rio de Janeiro. Explore the almost deserted beaches on a boat tour or hike across the island listening to the calls of howler monkeys echoing around the lush green valleys.
Isla de Mucura, Colombia
Mucura is accessed by boat from the sleepy seaside town of Tolu on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. The island is home to a small community of fishermen, and is almost entirely undeveloped. Pitch a tent just meters from the gently lapping waves, or check in to the island’s one hotel for a more luxurious stay.

Isla del Sol, Bolivia
Do not be fooled by the name because Sun Island is not the tropical beach paradise you may expect. Instead, it is situated on Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, and is a hugely important site for Inca ruins.
Chiloe, Chile
Those looking for a cultural experience will enjoy their time on Chiloe, home to a population distinct from the rest of Chile. Traditional wooden stilt houses line the waterside, and the misty weather lends Chiloe a mysterious charm.

Isla de la Plata, Ecuador
Often called the “poor man’s Galapagos,” Isla de la Plata offers budget travelers a chance to observe thousands of marine birds without paying for a trip to the more famous islands to the North. Head to Puerto Lopez and take a short boat ride to the island, which is home to a variety of species including red-footed boobies, blue-footed boobies and frigate birds.
