Cape Town is a city with a rich history in jazz. Its namesake jazz festival is the fourth largest in the world, highlighting the music’s presence in Cape Town’s culture. Here are five of our favorite jazz clubs around the South African city.
The Crypt
One of the most unique venues in jazz is The Crypt Jazz Restaurant, located underneath the historic St. George’s Cathedral. Several of South Africa’s premier musicians founded the venue, which has hosted the top jazz artists from around the world. The candlelit tables and high-end wine list makes for a sophisticated time.
Studio7
Studio7 is known for its intimate feel; a tiny venue that holds only 50 people. Guests sit on soft couches in a minimally decorated room of brick walls and wooden floors. The notoriously exclusive club attracts internationally respected artists, making this venue a place for serious sonic reflection.
Harvey’s at Winchester Mansions
Harvey’s is located in the seaside hotel, Winchester Mansions. The club hosts its famous Jazz Brunch every Sunday, where you can enjoy great music while chowing down on some great food and sipping on Champagne.
Kaleidoscope Café
This weekly jazz session is housed in Kaleidoscope Church, and does good work in supporting the local jazz community. Every Friday, the ministry serves up a classic meal of rice and curry while local and international jazz artists perform. Proceeds go toward helping undiscovered musicians and the families of retired artists who do not have the means to pay for a funeral.
West End Jazz Club
This is holy ground for any serious jazz head. Draped in velvet and bathed in glory, West End has a rich atmosphere and is considered to be the top venue for jazz in Cape Town, showcasing the best talent from around the world. West End is open on Fridays and Saturdays for jazz heads 21 and older.
