Washington State’s long Pacific coastline runs the gamut from tough-to-reach, wild and rocky beaches to calmer, sandy stretches near quaint towns. Whether you’re into kite flying, sandcastle building or wildlife viewing, there’s something for every type of traveler here. Among the best Washington beaches are:
Shi Shi Beach
Near the northwest corner of the state, Shi Shi Beach is part of Olympic National Park’s wild coastline. Tidepools abound as do otters, sea lions and bald eagles. Giant freestanding sea stacks add to the drama.
Rialto Beach
Great oceanfront campsites abound along this quiet stretch of beach, also within Olympic National Park. Rocky cliffs are dramatic here, and many people head to Hole in the Wall, a towering monolith carved by waves.
Second & Third Beach
Also within Olympic National Park, these beaches near Forks are accessible after walking a short distance through coastal rainforest. They’re excellent beach-combing spots and also offer views of dramatic sea stacks.
Long Beach
In southwest Washington, near the Oregon border, Long Beach is wide and flat, perfect for sandcastles, long jogs and kite flying. It’s also legal to drive on the beach, and many visitors go horseback riding too.
Ruby Beach
Huge piles of driftwood, nesting birds and tide pools are all a draw at this beach. It’s also easily accessible for those who are less physically able.
